Sermorelin

Designed to support your pituitary gland's natural production of growth hormone

About Sermorelin

Sermorelin is a synthetic peptide that mimics growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH). Rather than supplying growth hormone directly, it signals the pituitary gland to release more of its own — preserving the body's natural rhythm of secretion. It is taken as a small nightly subcutaneous injection and is most often used in adults to support recovery, sleep, and body composition as part of a broader wellness plan.

Common reasons patients ask about sermorelin:

  • May support sleep quality and recovery
  • Studied for its role in body composition — lean mass and fat distribution
  • May support energy and exercise recovery
  • Works with the body's natural growth hormone rhythm rather than replacing it

Data

What the studies show

Sermorelin has been studied for decades, primarily in pediatric growth hormone deficiency where it was once FDA-approved (the original branded product has since been discontinued). Adult wellness applications rely largely on smaller clinical and observational studies; large randomized trials in healthy adults are limited. It should be framed as a researched but still-evolving therapy in adult care.

How it works

Signals the body to release its own growth hormone

Sermorelin binds to receptors in the pituitary gland and signals it to release growth hormone. Because growth hormone is released in pulses — especially during deep sleep — sermorelin is typically taken at bedtime to align with the body's natural rhythm. Over time, this supports the pathways involved in recovery, sleep, and tissue repair.

Eligibility

Who sermorelin is for

Generally a good fit for

  • Adults interested in sleep, recovery, or body-composition support
  • Patients who prefer signaling-based therapy over direct hormone replacement
  • People who can commit to a consistent nightly injection routine

Not appropriate for

  • Pregnancy, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding
  • Active or recent malignancy without oncology clearance
  • Severe untreated thyroid disease, uncontrolled diabetes, or active critical illness
  • Known hypersensitivity to sermorelin or its components

Journey

What to expect & when

  1. Weeks 1–4

    • Many patients notice deeper or more refreshing sleep early on
    • Side effects, if any, are usually mild and resolve quickly
  2. Weeks 5+

    • Possible gradual changes in recovery, energy, and body composition with consistent nightly use
    • Effects build over months rather than days
  3. Ongoing

    • Continued monitoring, dose adjustments, and cycling decisions guided by your PreventiveMD provider

Side effects

Safety & side effects

Sermorelin is generally well tolerated. Because it acts on the pituitary, your provider may monitor IGF-1 or other markers periodically.

Common

  • Redness, warmth, or mild pain at the injection site
  • Headache
  • Flushing
  • Vivid dreams or transient sleep changes

Less common but serious

  • Allergic reaction
  • Possible effects on insulin sensitivity or glucose tolerance with long-term use
  • Unexpected changes in IGF-1 or related markers — discuss any new symptoms with your provider

If you have questions about whether sermorelin is right for you, your PreventiveMD provider will review your full health history once you get started.

Dosing

How to take sermorelin

  • Sermorelin is typically administered as a small subcutaneous injection at bedtime, five to seven nights per week. Specific dose is set by your provider based on goals and tolerance.

    How to inject

    1. 1Wash your hands thoroughly.
    2. 2Choose an injection site your provider recommended, rotating to a different spot than your last injection.
    3. 3Clean the site with an alcohol wipe and let it dry completely, then inject as instructed.
    4. 4Place the used needle and syringe in your sharps container.

Seek emergency care immediately if you experience difficulty breathing or swallowing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, hives or a widespread rash, dizziness or fainting, or a rapid heartbeat. These can be signs of a serious allergic reaction.

FAQs

In case you were wondering

Direct HGH (human growth hormone) replaces the hormone itself, which overrides the body's natural rhythm. Sermorelin signals the pituitary to release its own GH in natural pulses, which many clinicians consider a more physiologic approach.

Better sleep is often the first change patients report, sometimes within the first few weeks. Body composition and recovery changes tend to develop over months of consistent use.

Growth hormone is released in pulses, with the largest pulse during deep sleep. Taking sermorelin at bedtime aligns the signal with the body's natural rhythm.

The original branded sermorelin product was approved decades ago for pediatric growth hormone deficiency and has since been discontinued. Compounded sermorelin used in adult wellness is not FDA-approved as a finished drug product; it is prepared under physician supervision for individual patients.
